Tumor suppressive maspin functions as a ROS scavenger: Importance of cysteine residues
نویسندگان
چکیده
Capsule Background: Maspin is a multifaceted serpin. But the role of intracellular maspin is still not well understood. Results: Our study provides evidence that the structurally exposed cysteine residues in maspin reduce oxidative stress and cellular proliferation. Conclusion: Cysteine thiols in maspin scavenge reactive oxygen species in tumor cells. Significance: These findings elucidate the importance of cysteine residues of maspin in curbing oxidative stress.

متن کاملMaspin Expression and its Metastasis Suppressing Function in Prostate Cancer
Mammary Serine Protease Inhibitor (Maspin) is a unique member of the serpin family with tumor suppressive properties. Maspin is a secreted protein encoded by a class II tumor suppressor gene, expressed in normal prostate luminal and basal cells but reduced or absent in prostate cancer. Currently, there is a consensus that maspin expression in prostate cancer is an indicator of a better prognosi...

Objective(s): microRNA-29 (miR-29) family miRNAs have been mentioned as tumor suppressive genes in several human cancers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the function of miR-29a in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) cells. Materials and Methods: Human NPC cell line 5-8F was transfected with mimic, inhibitor or scrambled controls...
متن کاملPleiotrophic inhibition of pericellular urokinase-type plasminogen activator system by endogenous tumor suppressive maspin.
Maspin is a novel serine protease inhibitor with tumor suppressive activity, inhibiting tumor invasion and metastasis. To date, the underlying molecular mechanism of maspin remains elusive. Recombinant maspin has been shown to specifically inhibit cell surface-associated urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and fibrinogen-bound tissue-type plasminogen activator. However, the role of endog...
متن کاملMaspin expression inhibits osteolysis, tumor growth, and angiogenesis in a model of prostate cancer bone metastasis.
Emerging evidence indicates that tumor-associated proteolytic remodeling of bone matrix may underlie the capacity of tumor cells to colonize and survive in the bone microenvironment. Of particular importance, urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) has been shown to correlate with human prostate cancer (PC) metastasis. The importance of this protease may be related to its ability to initiate...
